Frequently Asked Questions

In general, homeowners’ insurance in Canada covers unexpected events, such as natural disasters, that damage a chimney. This includes fires, electrical fires, and flammable materials in the yard. However, normal damage caused by weather, winds, and other elements is generally not covered.

Chimney repairs can be done in the winter, but it’s only recommended in emergencies. Chimney companies can use tarps and heaters to make repairs in temperatures below 40ºF. Cold weather mortars can also be used in temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

The Ontario Building Code stipulates that an outside air kit is mandatory for most wood-burning fireplaces. In addition, some manufacturers require an outside air feed for their venting systems. As for a wood-burning stove, this would need to be decided on a case by case basis as there are pro’s and con’s to both.

Repairing a foundation often involves jacking up the building, rebuilding its underpinning, and grading the surface so that water drains away from the building. Some contractors have developed innovative methods of pushing heaved stone foundations back into place with jacks and heavy equipment.

Tuckpointing and repointing are both labor-intensive processes for repairing mortar damage. Tuckpointing is more of a preventative and aesthetic fix, while repointing is the process of sealing mortar joints.
